PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, nourished by the Word of God, let us now turn to God our Father in heaven and place before him our own needs and those of the Church and the world.

The response isLord graciously hear us.

We pray for the Church: that we may welcome the gift of the Spirit and be transformed by the Spirit’s work in us so that God’s mercy, compassion, and presence may be manifest to our world. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray, as we conclude the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, for all who have left their homelands in the hope of new life: that they may gain the peace and security they long for. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all who care for the earth and all its creatures: that Friday’s feast of St Francis of Assisi may inspire them to make the whole year a Season of Creation. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for each one of us here present: that we may be freed from pettiness and small-mindedness as we carry out the work God has entrusted to us. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have recently died: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

CONCLUSION: God our Father, help us to see all people through your eyes. Grant us the breadth of mind and the generosity of spirit to accept what is good from whatever resource. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OCTOBER DEVOTIONS

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. A plenary indulgence is granted when the rosary is recited in a church or oratory or when it is recited in a family, a religious community, or a pious association. A partial indulgence is granted for its recitation in all other circumstances.

CALENDAR

St. Jerome (+440), the great 4th-century saint and translator of the Scriptures, is remembered on Monday. Tuesday is the memorial of the Little Flower - St. Therese of the Child Jesus (+1897). As a teenager she joined a Carmelite monastery in her native Normandy and made a strong impression on the community. Her autobiography, written under obedience, reveals the simplicity and profundity of her faith. She died aged 24, and with St. Francis Xavier, is the co-patroness of the Missions. The feast of our Guardian Angels is kept on Wednesday. This memorial has been part of the Church’s calendar since 1670 and is a reminder to us that God has entrusted us to the protection and care of angels. Friday is the memorial of St. Francis of Assisi (+1226). The son of a wealthy merchant, Francis Bernardone, was a fun-loving and adventurous young man who turned to religion and decided to embark on a life of poverty and holiness by forming a community of like-minded Friars – known today as the Franciscans. His simple approach to life and his love of God’s creation has made him an inspirational figure to people of every generation.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR CHURCH BUILDING

& MAINTENANCE FUND next weekend

Next Sunday (6th October 2024), being the first Sunday of the month, the normal second collection will be taken up at all Masses to help support our Church Building and Maintenance Fund for the month of July.

A box intended for the Church Building & Maintenance Fund will be situated at the back of the church for the next two weeks beginning next weekend. Please be generous towards our second collection as this greatly helps pay for essentials such as continued maintenance and much needed repairs to our parish buildings and existing facilities.

MISSIONARY CHILDREN’S DAY

October has long been associated with mission. During the month of October the Church asks every member of the Catholic community around the world to recognise themselves as missionary disciples.

Last year (2023), the Bishop’s Conference of Scotland decided that the first Friday of October should be Missionary Children’s Day and should be celebrated annually in schools and parishes. A Missionary Children/Holy Childhood Day is celebrated in most countries where the Church is established.

Weather permitting, children from St. Cadoc’s Primary School will be attending the 10am Mass on Friday 4th October 2024 to celebrate Missionary Children’s Day. It is an occasion dedicated to all the children who, like adults, are missionaries, by virtue of Baptism. During the Mass we will recognise and thank the children for their missionary efforts, encouraging them to always reflect the light of Christ in the world by answering their call to mission starting at home.

wellspring project update

You will be aware the Diocese has launched a renewal project entitled ‘Wellspring” to encourage us respond with fervour to our baptismal calling by involving ourselves in the different ministries of our parish.

I continue to encourage as many parishioners as possible to become involved in the day to day running of the parish. Current volunteering opportunities include Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, laundering the altar linens, arranging flowers and decorating the church, as altar servers, sacristans, help in cleaning the church, readers at Mass, ministers to help distribute Holy Communion, SVDP, as pass keepers, offertory collection organisers, children’s liturgy helpers, safe-guarding co-ordinators, website co-ordinators, crib builders, volunteers to help maintain church grounds and open and close the church, etc. We are fortunate we are a parish community that lends itself to getting involved. However, opportunities exist for more parishioners to give of their time to participate in some aspect of parish life.

As part of this renewal project, in agreement with the head teacher of St Cadoc’s Primary School, it has been decided that children from the school community will bring the offering gifts in procession on the second Sunday of every month, starting from October. I thank Mrs Faloon, the head teacher, for taking such an initiative to get involved in the life of the parish.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY

We began the Children’s Liturgy of the Word once again at 10am Mass (except school holidays) from the beginning of September. I encourage parents, guardians & carers to bring their children to the church to participate in our children’s liturgy. Our young ones are the future of our parish. Their participation in parish activities, such as the children’s liturgy, is an important step in their faith formation. It is my humble and hearty request to parents, guardians & carers that you bring your children to a Sunday Mass on a regular basis.

We currently have a dedicated team of four Children’s Liturgists who lead the Liturgy of the Word discussions with our young people on a weekly basis. Two Liturgists attend each week to work with our young ones. Thanks to all those who have helped us in the Children’s Liturgy matters in previous years. We are looking for more volunteers. If any of you are interested in helping with the Children’s Liturgy Ministry on a Sunday, please contact Fr. Cirilo as soon as possible.

parking in the streets

surrounding the church

Unfortunately, parishioners of St. Cadocs’ who drive to church are in a situation where there is no private parking within the church grounds. The streets surrounding the church   therefore invariably become congested with parked cars especially at weekend Mass times. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of parking in relation to the church, I would ask those drivers attending services to consider the needs of local residents to have unimpeded access to their properties when choosing where to responsibly park. You can also use our car park which is situated behind the church. It can accommodate 6 cars.

RIGHT TO LIFE UK: PRAYING FOR THE UNBORN

AND WOMEN FACING CRISIS PREGNANCIES

29th September 2024: “This week we will be celebrating the feast days of both St Thérèse of Lisieux and St Francis of Assisi. Let us pray with their powerful intercession for our Government, that their ability to support pregnant women would increase and that they would anchor themselves on the desire to protect all human life.”

an act of spiritual communion

 (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

(This is a simple and loving act of Spiritual Communion we are called to make in these times,

while we are unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist)

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

prayer to st. michael

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in the day of battle.

Be our safeguard against the wickedness

and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts,

by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan, and all the evil spirits

who prowl the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
