PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, with hearts full of thanksgiving, we turn to God in prayer, for our needs and the needs of others.
The response is… Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the Church: that she may ever more effectively lead the faithful to the true treasures of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the wealthy nations of the world: that they may share their bounty with those who lack the bare necessities of life. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for those who have left everything to follow Christ: that the promised reward may keep them going in difficult times. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for each one of us here present: that we may have the wisdom to always seek first the kingdom of God and to spend our lives in its service. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have recently died: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
CONCLUSION: God our Father, you know the needs of your people. Hear our prayers and grant what we ask in faith. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OCTOBER DEVOTIONS
The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. A plenary indulgence is granted when the rosary is recited in a church or oratory or when it is recited in a family, a religious community, or a pious association. A partial indulgence is granted for its recitation in all other circumstances.

CALENDAR
This week has a variety of festivals. On Monday we recall the 3rd Century Pope and martyr Callistus I (+222). He extended forgiveness to those who had lapsed from their faith but wanted to return. He also opened the first Christian cemetery in Rome, part of which can be visited today. On Tuesday we remember St. Teresa of Avila (+1582), one of the greatest Spanish saints, who worked along with St. John of the Cross for the reform of her Carmelite Order, and whose books remain excellent guides in matters of prayer and spirituality. Wednesday is the memorial of two women saints: the noble Bavarian St. Hedwig, Duchess of Silesia (+1243), who entered the religious life upon her husband’s death; & St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a sister of the Visitandine Order, who promoted devotions in honour of the Sacred Heart as a result of her mystical visions. Thursday is the memorial of St Ignatius Bishop of Antioch, a disciple of the apostles condemned to die in the Roman amphitheatre. On his journey in chains to Rome he wrote letters to churches, which provide a picture of the 2nd century Christian Church. On Friday we have the Feast of St. Luke, author of a Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles that is its sequel. St. Paul speaks of ‘Our beloved Luke, the physician’, and he appears to have been with Paul on some of his journeys. He was a Greek, not very familiar with the Holy Land and is said by an early tradition to have ended his days in Greece. On Saturday we have the opportunity of celebrating the memory of St. Paul of the Cross, founder of the Passionist order, well-known to us from St. Mungo’s Church in Glasgow. On Saturday we can also celebrate the 17th-century French Jesuits – Jean de Brebuef, Isaac Jogues and others – who after a period of some evangelizing success among the Huron Indians in Canada were captured, tortured, mutilated, burnt and eventually eaten by Iroquois war-parties.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR CHURCH BUILDING
& MAINTENANCE FUND
This will be the last weekend if you would like to contribute to our normal Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection for the month of October.
A box meant for the Church Building & Maintenance Fund Collections is situated at the back of the church. Please be generous towards our second collection as this greatly helps pay for essentials such as continued maintenance and much needed repairs to our parish buildings and existing facilities.

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENTS
Thank you to the parents, guardians and carers of our children from St. Cadoc’s and St. Charles’ Primary Schools for attending the sacramental meetings during the week. My thanks also to the teachers, school staff and all others who support and do their best to help our children in their faith formation. Once again, I wish to remind parents, guardians & carers of candidates for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation of the importance of attending the Mass faithfully each week.

wellspring project update
You will be aware the Diocese has launched a renewal project entitled ‘Wellspring” to encourage us respond with fervour to our baptismal calling by involving ourselves in the different ministries of our parish.
I continue to encourage as many parishioners as possible to become involved in the day to day running of the parish. Current serving opportunities include: Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, volunteers to help look after the altar linens, arrange flowers and decorate the Church. Other options include, as altar servers, sacristans, volunteers to help clean the church, readers at Mass, ministers to help distribute Holy Communion, SVDP, as pass keepers, offertory collection organisers, children’s liturgy helpers, safe-guarding co-ordinators, website co-ordinators, crib builders, volunteers to help maintain church grounds and open and close the church, etc. We are fortunate in that we are a parish community that lends itself to getting involved. Opportunities always exist for parishioners to volunteer and participate in some aspect of parish life.
As part of this renewal project, in agreement with the head teacher of St Cadoc’s Primary School, it has been decided that children from the school community will bring the offering gifts in procession on the second Sunday of every month, starting from October. I thank Mrs Faloon, the head teacher, for taking such an initiative to get involved in the life of the parish.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place at 10am Mass (except school holidays). Thank you to the Parish Children’s Liturgy Team for all the help they give me by leading the Children’s Liturgy on a regular basis in St. Cadoc’s. We are looking for more volunteers. If any of you are interested in helping with the Children’s Liturgy Ministry on a Sunday, please contact Fr. Cirilo as soon as possible.
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word will not be on for the next three weekends beginning today (because of October week holiday & Enrolment Masses) and will resume again on Sunday 3rd November 2024.

CATHEDRAL YOUNG ADULT NIGHT
‘All young people aged S6 and above are warmly invited to our Sunday Night gathering at the Cathedral in Motherwell next Sunday 20th October 2024 from 7.30pm – 8.30pm. We gather for a spiritual input followed by time for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and afterwards there’s an option to gather for social time in a relaxed setting. Around 30 young people from across the diocese gather every month, and we are forming a very fun and welcoming community which also takes part in other events and pilgrimages: why not come along and join them, you’ll be made very welcome.’

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP WITH RISING ENERGY BILLS (GAS & ELECTRICITY)
As we head into winter, we face an expensive but essential bill for heating our church. Keeping warm over the winter months is vital for both the well-being of those attending the church, regardless of how full or not the pews may be, as well as the protection of the fabric of the building from both surface and interstitial condensation. Irrevocably this means high heating bills.
Since the aftermath of Covid-19, the cost of living, from buying groceries to heating our church and presbytery, has been on the rise sharply every day. Overall, our expenditures have increased faster than income. Our parish relies entirely on your contributions to pay our bills. I kindly appeal to your generosity to add an extra pound or two to your weekly contributions to help defray, in particular this winter, the high costs of energy bills.

CHURCH CLEANING
Thank you to all our parish volunteers [Irene Savage, Rose Hewitt, Rita Kelly, Anne McCafferty, Bernadette Goodwin, Frances Goodwin, Jane Ngomo & Anne Lennon] who generously gave of their time to clean the Church yesterday (Saturday). It makes all the difference! We are very lucky in St. Cadoc’s that our church is cleaned every third Saturday. Many on coming to church comment on how clean, tidy and welcoming our church is, and that is testament to the wonderful cleaning team.
We could do with more people willing to give of their time every three weeks to help with general cleaning of the church which takes place on a Saturday morning. If you would like to help with cleaning, please contact Anne Lennon, the parish co-ordinator, or Fr. Cirilo.

parking in the streets
surrounding the church
Unfortunately, parishioners of St. Cadocs’ who drive to church are in a situation where there is no private parking within the church grounds. The streets surrounding the church therefore invariably become congested with parked cars especially at weekend Mass times. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of parking in relation to the church, I would ask those drivers attending services to consider the needs of local residents to have unimpeded access to their properties when choosing where to responsibly park. You can also use our car park which is situated behind the church. It can accommodate 6 cars.

RIGHT TO LIFE UK: PRAYING FOR THE UNBORN
AND WOMEN FACING CRISIS PREGNANCIES
13th October 2024: “This week, we will celebrate the feast day of St Gerard Majella, the patron saint of expectant mothers. We pray for all who work in maternity units with pregnant women, that they may recognise that God is truly with us in each unborn child. Lord hear us.”

an act of spiritual communion
(St. Alphonsus Liguori)
(This is a simple and loving act of Spiritual Communion we are called to make in these times,
while we are unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist)
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the
Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there
and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

prayer to st. michael
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness
and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts,
by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan, and all the evil spirits
who prowl the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Holy mary, mother of god,
st. Joseph,
st. Michael and holy angels,
ST. CADOC,
Pray for us
