READINGS FOR THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)

First Reading – (1 Kings 17:10-16) – In this reading we meet a pagan widow who in the middle or a famine shares the last of her food with a hungry man. In doing so she learns a great lesson, namely, that it is in giving that we receive.

Responsorial Psalm – My soul, give praise to the Lord.

Second Reading – (Hebrews 9: 24-28) Through his death Christ has taken our sins upon himself and he has opened for us the door of salvation.

Gospel Reading(Mark 12:38-44) Here Jesus contrasts the spirit of giving by the wealthy with that of a poor widow who gives all that she has.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, acknowledging that God is the giver of all that is good, let us now place before him our own needs and those of the Church and the world.

The response isLord graciously hear us.

We pray for the Church: that we may grow in recognizing our dependence upon God’s providence and entrust all our needs to God who loves us. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray, on this Remembrance Sunday, for all those who have died in war, for those known to us and for the countless numbers who are unknown: that they may rest in peace, and that their memory may inspire us always to work for peace in our day. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for each one of us here present: that, following the example of the poor widow from today’s Gospel, we may become cheerful and generous givers and depend on the generosity of God. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We remember in our prayers all our near and dear departed ones whose names are or will be on our November Liststhat God may lead them to the peace of the eternal banquet. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have recently died: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

CONCLUSION: God our Father, you are the source of every blessing and we give you praise and thanks. Accept our humble prayers and grant what we need according to your holy will. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ANNUAL MASS CENSUS

CALENDAR

On Tuesday we have St. Josaphat (+1623) who worked tirelessly for the union of the Eastern and Western Churches. His own people nominated him Archbishop, but he suffered martyrdom at the hands of those who opposed his efforts.  He is buried in the Vatican. Wednesday is the optional memorial of St Machar, a sixth century Irish missionary, who is believed to have worked on the Isle of Mull and perhaps eastern Scotland. Friday is the optional memorial of St. Albert the Great (+1280). A Dominican friar and expert in philosophy, he taught the great theologian and fellow-Dominican St. Thomas Aquinas. He became Bishop of Cologne. Saturday is the feast of our country’s second patron, St. Margaret Queen of Scotland, the Hungarian-born English princess who found herself in Scotland when fleeing the Normans and became Malcolm Canmore’s Consort.  Her personal charity and holiness and her zeal for Christ’s Church led to an early veneration for her as a saint and the ‘translation’ of her relics to Dunfermline Abbey. Her feast is the anniversary of her death in 1097.

month of the holy souls

During the month of November it is traditional in the Church to pray for those who have gone before us and whose loss we feel. We do this in many ways but the most common is to remember them at Mass. If you would like your dead loved ones to be remembered at Mass during this month of the Holy Souls, then please complete a November list provided with today’s bulletin and return it to the box provided at the back of the Church.

“The remembrance of the dead, the care for graves and prayers of repose are a witness of the confident hope, rooted in the certainty that death is not the final word on the human fate, since man is destined to a life without limits which has its roots and its fulfilment in God.” Please come to Mass more frequently during the month of November to pray for all the Faithful Departed. As we pray together for our deceased family members, relatives and friends, remembering also those who have no one to pray for them, we ask the Lord to continue to watch over and bless you, your family, and your friends.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR CHURCH BUILDING

& MAINTENANCE FUND

This will be the last weekend if you would like to contribute to our normal Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection for the month of November.

A box meant for the Church Building & Maintenance Fund Collections is situated at the back of the church. Please be generous towards our second collection as this greatly helps pay for essentials such as continued maintenance and much needed repairs to our parish buildings and existing facilities.

WELCOME TO FR. JIM CLARKE

We welcome back to our community Fr. Jim Clarke, a Xaverian missionary priest, who is no stranger to our parish. He will be with us from Thursday 7th November 2024 until Monday 2nd December 2024 while I am away home to India. We thank Fr. Jim Clarke in advance for his help during my time away. I hope he will enjoy his time with us.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION SUNDAY

Next weekend (16th/17th November 2024) we celebrate Catholic Education Sunday in our parish, a day when we pray for the continuing success of Catholic Schools in serving our own community and contributing to the well-being of the country as a whole. We remember with gratitude our ancestors who set up and supported our Catholic Schools with very little in the way of resources. The upkeep of the Church agencies which help promote and support (and sometimes defend) our schools is costly. The annual Special Collection to support the work of the Catholic Education Commission and the Scottish Catholic Education Service which helps to develop and support our excellent schools, will be taken up at all Masses on the weekends of 16th/17th November 2023 & 23th/24th November 2024. The collection provides the salaries for those employed and the services provided to support Catholic Education in our Primary and Secondary schools.

CONFIRMATIONS

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred on the upper-Primary young people from St. Cadoc’s Primary School by Bishop Joseph Toal on Tuesday 10th December 2024 at 7pm in St. Cadoc’s Parish Church. Please pray that our young people, strengthened by the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation, will be true witnesses of Christ to others. May they spread and defend the faith by word and deed.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place at 10am Mass (except school holidays). I encourage parents, guardians & carers to bring their children to the church to participate in our children’s liturgy. Our young ones are the future of our parish. Their participation in parish activities, such as the children’s liturgy, is an important step in their faith formation. It is my humble and hearty request to parents, guardians & carers that you bring your children to a Sunday Mass on a regular basis.

WELLSPRING RENEWAL PROJECT

As part of this renewal project, children from St. Cadoc’s Primary School will be bringing the offering gifts in procession today at 10 am Mass (second Sunday of the month). I thank Mrs Faloon, the head teacher, and other staff members of St. Cadoc’s Primary School for taking this initiative and for her commitment to get pupils more involved in the life of the parish. Thank you also to the parents, guardians and carers for making the efforts for their presence at Mass and for bringing their children to our Sunday Mass on regular basis.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP WITH RISING ENERGY BILLS (GAS & ELECTRICITY)

As we head into winter, we face an expensive but essential bill for heating our church. Keeping warm over the winter months is vital for both the well-being of those attending the church, regardless of how full or not the pews may be, as well as the protection of the fabric of the building from both surface and interstitial condensation. Irrevocably this means high heating bills.

Since the aftermath of Covid-19, the cost of living, from buying groceries to heating our church and presbytery, has been on the rise sharply every day. Overall, our expenditures have increased faster than income. Our parish relies entirely on your contributions to pay our bills. I kindly appeal to your generosity to add an extra pound or two to your weekly contributions to help defray, in particular this winter, the high costs of energy bills.

parking in the streets

surrounding the church

Unfortunately, parishioners of St. Cadocs’ who drive to church are in a situation where there is no private parking within the church grounds. The streets surrounding the church   therefore invariably become congested with parked cars especially at weekend Mass times. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of parking in relation to the church, I would ask those drivers attending services to consider the needs of local residents to have unimpeded access to their properties when choosing where to responsibly park. You can also use our car park which is situated behind the church. It can accommodate 6 cars.

an act of spiritual communion

 (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

(This is a simple and loving act of Spiritual Communion we are called to make in these times,

while we are unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist)

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

prayer to st. michael

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in the day of battle.

Be our safeguard against the wickedness

and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts,

by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan, and all the evil spirits

who prowl the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
