solemnity of the most holy body

and blood of christ (C)

READINGS FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY

AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (C)

First Reading – (Genesis 14: 18-20) – A pagan priest-king by the name of Melchizedek gives bread and wine to Abraham and makes a profession of faith in the one true God. In Christian tradition this bread and wine were taken to prefigure the Eucharist.

Responsorial Psalm – You are a priest forever;

a priest like Melchizedek of old.

Second Reading – (1 Corinthians 11: 23-26) When we celebrate the Eucharist we do not merely make Christ’s Body and Blood, but we re-enact the death by which he saved us.

Gospel Reading(Luke 9:11-17) Jesus provides an extraordinary meal for the people who followed him to a lonely place. In the Eucharist the Church continues the mission of Christ to teach, heal and nourish the People of God.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, filled with a deep sense of gratitude and joy at the great gift given to us in the Eucharist, let us now turn to God the Father and pray, through his Son Jesus Christ, for our own needs and those of the Church and the world.

The response isLord graciously hear us.

We pray for the leaders of the Church: that they may lead us to an ever greater appreciation of Jesus’ giving of himself in the Eucharist. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for those who hunger and thirst in our world: that all governments may continue to develop effective programs that ensure the availability of food and water, especially for the peoples of developing countries. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all of humankind: that, as we cherish and celebrate the gift of life, as a society we will grow in our awareness of the meaning and value of life at every stage and in every condition. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for our faith community as we gather to celebrate the Eucharist: that we may grow in our appreciation of Christ’s Body given for us and his Blood shed for us as we live as Jesus showed us. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have died recently: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

CONCLUSION:  God our Father, as we celebrate today’s feast,  hear our prayers and grant us a love of the Eucharist  that will never grow stale  but will deepen and intensify  all the days of our life. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY

Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, formerly known as Corpus Christi Sundaya feast celebrating the enduring presence of Our Lord on earth through the gifts of his Body and Blood. The late Pope John Paul II reminded us in his Apostolic Letter, Dominicae Cenae, (The Lord’s Supper) that “the Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic worship. Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love; let us therefore be generous with our time in going to meet him in adoration and contemplation.”

CALENDAR

Tuesday is the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist. Friday is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This solemnity celebrates not an event, but the love of God manifested in the Heart of His Son. Devotion to the Sacred Heart grew throughout the late Middle Ages and was made popular by two French Saints: the religious sister Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and the priest Saint John Eudes. On Saturday we honour the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

feast of saints peter and paul

Next Sunday, 29th June 2025, is the Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul. This feast has commemorated the martyrdom of these two saints on this date since 354 AD. According to an ancient tradition, Peter (meaning Rock), the fisherman from Galilee, head of the Apostles, and first Pope, died by crucifixion in 67AD, the last year of the Emperor Nero’s reign. He was crucified at his own request with his head pointing downward, not considering himself worthy to die like Christ, his Master. Recent archaeological excavations confirm that his martyrdom took place on the Vatican Hill, which was once home to Nero’s Circus, and the site of the Papal Basilica which is dedicated in his honour today.

Saul (later Paul) of Tarsus in modern-day Turkey was a Pharisee and persecutor of Christians; he had been present in Jerusalem at the death of St. Stephen, the first martyr. He was converted after an extraordinary experience on the road to Damascus in Syria. From there he went to see Peter in Jerusalem. Soon afterwards, he set off on the first of three missionary journeys that would take him to Syria, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Rome and Spain. He returned to Rome where he was beheaded outside the city walls in the year 67AD. The place of his martyrdom is commemorated today by the Basilica of St. Paul-Outside-The-Walls.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE WORK OF THE APOSTOLATE OF LIFE (DAY FOR LIFE)

This will be the last weekend if you would like to contribute for the work of the Apostolate of the Pro-Life. A box intended for the work of the Apostolate of Life is situated at the back of the church. I hope you will contribute with your usual generosity to this worthwhile cause.

Day for Life is a day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. In Scotland we keep our Annual Day for Life on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 31st May.

a happy summer holiday

As we come to the last week of the school year, I wish our children and young people, their families and staff of our Primary Schools of St. Cadoc’s and St. Charles’ and the associated Trinity High School, a restful and peaceful summer holiday. May they return from the summer break feeling refreshed and ready to take on new challenges in the new academic year in the middle of August.

NEW PARISHIONERS

We would ask those who are new to the parish, or who are moving house within the parish, to record their name, address and telephone number on the registration card provided in the porch of the church. I would greatly appreciate your involvement in the parish. If you have any spare time, talents, or skills to share, I rely on the kindness and support of parishioners like you to help us grow and serve our community better. It is also very helpful if those moving from the parish let us know, so that our statistics can be kept up to date. Please be assured that any data we have (including the parish survey I undertook in 2016) will be held in a secure way and will never be shared or given to anyone else.

parking in the streets

surrounding the church

Unfortunately, parishioners of St. Cadocs’ who drive to church are in a situation where there is no private parking within the church grounds. The streets surrounding the church   therefore invariably become congested with parked cars especially at weekend Mass times. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of parking in relation to the church, I would ask those drivers attending services to consider the needs of local residents to have unimpeded access to their properties when choosing where to responsibly park. You can also use our car park which is situated behind the church. It can accommodate 6 cars.

an act of spiritual communion

 (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

(This is a simple and loving act of Spiritual Communion we are called to make in these times,

while we are unable to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist)

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

prayer to st. michael

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in the day of battle.

Be our safeguard against the wickedness

and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts,

by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan, and all the evil spirits

who prowl the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
