PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, God fulfils all our needs and is the source of everything we have and all that we are. Mindful of God’s love and care for us, let us now turn to him and pray for our own needs and those of the Church and the world.

The response isLord graciously hear us.

We pray for the Church throughout the world: that a spirit of gratitude may fill us, inspiring us to share God’s goodness with others. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for a lasting peace in the Holy Land, for those grieving the loss of loved ones, for the release of hostages and prisoners, and for those whose homes and livelihood have been destroyed: that a just solution to the ongoing conflicts may be found and peace, security and dignity be restored for all the people. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all young people who are preparing this year for their First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion or to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the coming weeks and months: that they and their parents may be strengthened in their commitment to the faith of their Baptism. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for our parish community in this month of the Holy Rosary: that we may grow in faith, hope and love through deeper devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Rosary. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have died recently: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

CONCLUSION: God our Father, you are the source of all we have and are. Teach us to be always grateful for the many good things you have given us. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OCTOBER DEVOTIONS

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others. A plenary indulgence is granted when the rosary is recited in a church or oratory or when it is recited in a family, a religious community, or a pious association. A partial indulgence is granted for its recitation in all other circumstances.

calendar

Tuesday is the memorial of the 3rd Century Pope and martyr Callistus I (+222). He opened the first Christian cemetery in Rome, part of which can be visited today. On Wednesday we remember St. Teresa of Avila (+1582), one of the greatest Spanish saints, who worked along with St. John of the Cross for the reform of her Carmelite Order, and whose books remain excellent guides in matters of prayer and spirituality. Thursday is the memorial of two women saints: the noble Bavarian St. Hedwig, Duchess of Silesia (+1243), who entered the religious life upon her husband’s death, and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a sister of the Visitandine Order, who promoted  devotions in honour of the Sacred Heart as a result of her mystical visions. Friday is the memorial of St Ignatius Bishop of Antioch, a disciple of the apostles condemned to die in the Roman amphitheatre. During his journey to Rome, he wrote seven letters to various churches, which provide invaluable insight into the early Christian Church, particularly concerning Church unity, the authority of bishops and the importance of the Eucharist. His writings also contain the earliest known use of the word "Catholic" (meaning universal) to describe the Church. On Saturday we have the Feast of St. Luke, author of a Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles that is its sequel.   He appears to have been with Paul on some of his journeys.

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENTS

Thank you to the parents, guardians and carers of our children from St. Cadoc’s and St. Charles’ Primary Schools for attending the sacramental meetings during the week. My thanks also to the teachers, school staff and all others who support and do their best to help our children in their faith formation. Once again, I wish to remind parents, guardians & carers of candidates for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation of the importance of attending the Mass faithfully each week.

second collection for church building

& maintenance fund

This will be the last weekend if you would like to contribute to our normal Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection for the month of October. A box meant for the church building & maintenance fund collection is situated at the back of the church.  Please be generous towards our second collection as this greatly helps pay for essentials such as continued maintenance and much needed repairs to our parish buildings and existing facilities.

The Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection is dedicated to ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the church building. This includes things like roof repairs, heating system, electrical work, and other essential maintenance tasks. The usual weekly offertory collection helps us cover the day-to-day costs of running the church, such as utilities (electricity, heating, water), insurance, church services, general maintenance of church properties, administrative needs and various sundry expenses.

On the other hand the undertaking of any of the major repair works previously mentioned, when needed, plus other essential costs associated with the running of the parish, would not be possible without your additional help and support. Your parish church dedicated to St. Cadoc’s very much depends on your contributions and generosity.

Once again, I thank all those who, over the years, have attended this church of St. Cadoc’s and I appreciate the many contributions that have been and continue to be made to the parish, and I look forward to your ongoing assistance in the future.

THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE MISSIONS

Next Sunday (19th October 2025) is the World Day of Prayer and Giving for the Missions. You are asked to be earnest in your prayers that God’s word be brought to earth’s farthest corners and to people who appear to be at a great distance from Christ, and generous in your contribution for the work of the Missions. We have a marvellous record in St. Cadoc’s in helping the spread of the Faith in mission lands and we look forward to your continued generosity in our second collection at all Masses next weekend. The amount gathered will go to support the Missions. A box intended to support the collection for the missions will be situated at the back of the church for the next two weeks beginning next weekend.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP WITH RISING ENERGY BILLS (GAS & ELECTRICITY)

As we head into winter, we face an expensive but essential bill for heating our church. Keeping warm over the winter months is vital for both the well-being of those attending the church, regardless of how full or not the pews may be, as well as the protection of the fabric of the building from both surface and interstitial condensation. Irrevocably this means high heating bills.

Since the aftermath of Covid-19, the cost of living, from buying groceries to heating our church and presbytery, has been on the rise sharply every day. Overall, our expenditures have increased faster than income. Our parish relies entirely on your contributions to pay our bills. I kindly appeal to your generosity to add an extra pound or two to your weekly contributions to help defray, in particular this winter, the high costs of energy bills.

DO YOU WANT TO JOIN THE GIFT-AID SCHEME

AND HELP THE PARISH

It’s so simple. If you are a tax payer, normally come to Church, and are prepared to put your money offering in a confidential numbered envelope (or pay by Standing order) and sign a simple form, then the parish can (at no cost to yourself) reclaim the tax you have already paid on that offering. For every pound you give, your parish will get back an additional 25 pence from the Inland Revenue. Thanks are extended to all those who have answered our appeal and have committed to gift-aid their offerings. Anyone wishing to join the scheme, please contact Jim Cunningham, our parish Gift Aid organiser or Fr. Cirilo. Alternatively, you can contribute to the Sunday Mass collections via a direct debit or standing order arrangement with your bank. Thank you once again for your enduring generosity and support.

NEW PARISHIONERS

We would ask those who are new to the parish, or who are moving house within the parish, to record their name, address and telephone number on the registration card provided in the porch of the church. I would greatly appreciate your involvement in the parish. If you have any spare time, talents, or skills to share, I rely on the kindness and support of parishioners like you to help us grow and serve our community better. It is also very helpful if those moving from the parish let us know, so that our statistics can be kept up to date. Please be assured that any data we have (including the parish survey I undertook in 2016) will be held in a secure way and will never be shared or given to anyone else.

parking in the streets

surrounding the church

A core part of our mission is to be good neighbours, both to one another and to those who live around our church. A handful of our neighbours have reached out with concerns about their driveways being blocked by vehicles during our services and gatherings. Please be mindful of where you park to ensure you are not blocking access to our neighbours’ homes. Thank you for your kindness and cooperation.
