READINGS FOR THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS
AND THE ELDERLY (A)
First Reading – (Exodus 16: 1-5, 9-15) – In this reading the Israelites find themselves in the wilderness, grumbling and discontented, as they long for the comforts they left behind in Egypt. Despite God’s miraculous liberation from slavery, their faith wavers in the face of uncertainty and adversity. Yet, in the midst of their doubts, God’s divine providence shines forth as he provides manna from heaven to nourish and sustain them on their journey.
Responsorial Psalm – The Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David.
Second Reading – (James-2: 14-17) – This reading contains a very important message, namely, that faith without good works is dead.
Gospel Reading – (Matthew 13: 1-9) – Jesus presents the parable of the sower, a powerful metaphor for the reception of God’s Word. Just as the sower scatters seeds on various types of soil, so too does the Word of God encounter different dispositions in human hearts. Some hearts are hardened and unresponsive, while others receive the Word with joy, only to falter in times of trial. However, the fertile soil brings forth an abundant harvest, producing fruits that endure.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly, we thank God for the witness of faith passed down through generations. Trusting in the Lord's promise that he never forgets or abandons his children, let us offer him our prayers for the Church and the world.
The response is… Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the Church throughout the world: that it may always be a welcoming, joyful home where grandparents and the elderly are deeply cherished and integrated into the heart of our community. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for grandparent and elderly relatives in our families: that they may remain constant in faith and love, find joy in their families, and be granted the strength and health to continue passing on the treasure of faith to younger generations. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for parents: that through the holy examples of Saints Joachim and Anne, they may nurture, teach and raise their children to know, love and trust God. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for our families: that they may grow in holiness and that our homes may become grace filled sanctuaries of love. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for all the sick of our families and our parish, those in hospital, in hospice or nursing home and those for whom we are asked to pray: that God may give them strength and fortitude, and bless those who care for them. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the souls of all those whose anniversaries, months mind and birthday remembrances we are asked to recall, as well as those who have recently died: that they may receive the reward of their faith and enjoy the happiness of heaven. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.
CONCLUSION: God our Father, you are the rock and fortress of your children from youth to old age. Look with love upon the grandparents and elders of our world. Hear the prayers of your faithful people, and grant that we may all walk together toward the hope of your eternal kingdom. We make this prayer and all our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.

WORLD DAY FOR PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS
& THE ELDERLY
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Saints of Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus.
In 2021, Pope Francis established a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly into the Universal Church calendar, recognising the vital part they play in all societies and families, and in the life and mission of the Church. This annual feast is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July, the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (26 July), parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus.
The Feast honours their deep devotion, their spiritual nurturing of Mary for her future role, and their vital intergenerational role in family heritage. ‘Grandparents are the link between generations, passing on the experience of life and faith to the young” Pope Francis said in declaring World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. It is a special day to thank God and to pray for all the grandparents and the elderly who have generously transmitted the gift of life and faith to the succeeding generations with their love, affection, wisdom and life experience, despite their advanced age and increasing physical limitations. Without them, many children would be deprived of much needed love, affection, company and education. Through the intercession of Saints Joachim and Anne, we pray for all the grandparents and the elderly that they may continue providing the indispensable love, support and affection to their grandchildren with their prayers, faith, wisdom and holiness.

On Wednesday we recall the memorial of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus of Bethany, three siblings who lived in a village just outside Jerusalem during the time of Christ, with whom Jesus had a special bond of love and friendship. In the Gospels according to Luke and John, Mary, Martha and Lazarus are described as close and much-loved friends of Jesus. Martha, Mary and Lazarus are particularly remembered because of their friendship with Jesus, because of their hospitality, because they listened to him attentively, and because they believed that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. In February 2021, Pope Francis changed the liturgical feast of St. Martha (which is normally commemorated July 29) to include her sister and brother, Mary and Lazarus. Thursday is the memorial of St Peter Chrysologus, a 5th century bishop who built many churches in the imperial city of Ravenna. However he was more known for his simple sermons adapted to the needs of his people. He was praised by Pope Leo the Great for his defence of the true faith in Christ as God and Man against current heresies. On Friday we have St. Ignatius Loyola, the 16th century Basque soldier who experienced a conversion while recovering from wounds and went on to found the order which in the fields of missionary work, education, and theology was the mainstay of the ‘Counter-Reformation’ from the mid-16th Century onwards. On Saturday we celebrate St Alphonsus Liguori, the great moral theologian who founded the Redemptorists in 1732. The Redemptorists, chiefly known for their parish missions, are also distinguished in the field of Moral Theology, in which their founder worked for much of his long life to redress the pessimistic Jansenist view of human guilt before God.

FRANCISCAN SISTERS MISSION APPEAL
This will be the last weekend if you would like to contribute for the work of the religious Society of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is a religious congregation founded in the East End of Glasgow in 1847. Through regular deanery mission appeals held across Scotland, they raise vital funds to support their ongoing pastoral care, education, and social outreach work for poor and vulnerable communities globally.
We have a marvellous record in St. Cadoc’s in helping the spread of the Faith in mission lands and the missionaries, and I look forward to your continued generosity in our second collection today. A box intended to support the work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is situated at the back of the church. As a missionary people, we are called to stretch our hearts beyond the boundaries of our own parish. Thank you in advance for your generosity and your prayers.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH BUILDING
& MAINTENANCE FUND NEXT WEEKEND
Next Sunday (2nd August 2026), being the first Sunday of the month, the normal second collection will be taken up at all Masses to help support our Church Building and Maintenance Fund for the month of August.
A box intended for the Church Building & Maintenance Fund Collection will be situated at the back of the church for the next two weeks beginning next weekend. Please be generous towards our second collection as this greatly helps pay for essentials such as continued maintenance and much needed repairs to our parish buildings and existing facilities.
Our monthly Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection, which is specifically for the upkeep and repair of the church buildings itself, has been experiencing quite a sharp decline over the last few months, well below the average of £700 a month. The Church Building and Maintenance Fund Collection is dedicated to ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the church building.
This includes things like roof repairs, heating system, electrical work, and other essential maintenance tasks. The usual weekly offertory collection helps us cover the day-to-day costs of running the church, such as utilities (electricity, heating, water), insurance, church services, general maintenance of church properties, administrative needs and various sundry expenses. On the other hand, the undertaking of any of the major repair works previously mentioned, when needed, plus other essential costs associated with the running of the parish, would not be possible without your additional help and support. Your parish church dedicated to St. Cadoc’s very much depends on your contributions and generosity. Once again, I thank all those who, over the years, have attended this church of St. Cadoc’s and I appreciate the many contributions that have been and continue to be made to the parish, and I look forward to your ongoing assistance in the future.

SOLEMN CONSECRATION OF ST. MARY’S
SYRO-MALABAR CHURCH
The Syro-Malabar Catholic community in the Motherwell Diocese cordially invite all parishioners, families, and friends to join them for the solemn consecration of St. Mary's Church, Craigneuk Street, Wishaw, today (Sunday, 26th July 2026) at 2.30pm. The consecration and Holy Qurbana will be presided over by Mar Joseph Srampickal, bishop of the Syro-Malabar Eparchial of Great Britain, alongside community leaders and local representatives. We keep the Syro-Malabar Catholic community in the Motherwell Diocese in our prayers as they prepare for this sacred day.

Please join us for our Annual ‘Thank You’ Party on Tuesday 18th August 2026. The celebration will take place in the church house (presbytery) from 6pm to 7.30pm. All parishioners and well-wishers of St. Cadoc’s Parish Community are warmly invited to the fellowship buffet. This invitation, will afford me the opportunity to say “Thank You” for supporting and contributing to the life of our parish. A great strength of our parish is that we all pull together to make the parish work. We all participate in every aspect of the church from attending Mass to providing a welcoming atmosphere at every service to cleaning up the grounds. There is no job that is too great for this parish family. Marvellous! I look forward to welcoming you on that day. There is no charge for the party, however, a donation would, if possible, be greatly appreciated.
