READINGS FOR TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (A)
First Reading – (Isaiah 55:6–9) – We often look upon God in very human terms. We make him as small-minded as ourselves. But in this reading God says: “My ways are not your ways.”
Responsorial Psalm – The Lord is close to all who call him.
Second Reading – (Philippians 1:20-24, 27) – Lines written by St. Paul from prison to his friends at Philippi. He is thinking about his death and longs for complete union with Christ.
Gospel Reading – (Matthew 20:1-16) – This contains a story about God’s generosity which rises far above our human standards.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
INTROUCTION: Dear brothers and sisters, God’s ways are not our ways, and his justice is far more generous than our human standards of fairness. Trusting in his boundless mercy, let us now turn to God our Father and pray to him for our own needs and those of the Church and the world.
The response is… Lord graciously hear us.
╬ We pray for the leaders of the Church: that they may be authentic witnesses to the radical generosity of the Gospel, helping us to build a welcoming community where all people are loved exactly as God loves us — without limits, conditions or exceptions. Lord, hear us; Lord graciously hear us.

vocations awareness week
Today we conclude the National Vocations Awareness Week (13th – 20th September 2026). Every year, the Catholic Church in Scotland sets aside a week in which we are all asked to reflect on our vocation within the Christian family, a vocation which flows from our shared Baptismal vocation to grow in holiness and in service of others. In particular, we are asked: to pray especially for those who are considering the possibility of a vocation to priesthood, permanent diaconate, religious or consecrated life - that they may follow in our Lord's footsteps and answer His call to serve His people in ministry; to remember those in formation who have answered the call as we pray for their perseverance and the gifts they need to minister effectively and graciously to Christ's people. The need for vocations has never been greater. May the Catholic Church of Scotland, at the conclusion of Vocations Awareness Week, continue to receive the gift of priests, deacons, religious and dedicated lay women and men for the building up of God’s Kingdom.

On Monday we have the feast of St Matthew, apostle and evangelist. The tax-collector of Capernaum who became Christ’s follower is said to have preached afterwards to his fellow Jews and later to have been martyred in Ethiopia or Persia, but no reliance can be placed on these legends. It is more important to appreciate the gospel ascribed to him from very early times. Most scholars agree that it is later than Mark’s gospel, drawing on that gospel and on other sources, especially a collection of the sayings of Jesus. The desire to present Jesus as the fulfilment of Jewish prophecy is very strong, especially in his version of Christ’s birth and infancy; the story of the Magi is his. On Wednesday we celebrate the memorial of St Pio of Pietrelcina – first stigmatized Capuchin priest in the history of the Catholic Church. A permitted memorial on Saturday is that of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Their names have been included since the early centuries in the lists of Saints to be recalled in the liturgy, and there is good evidence that saints of these names were martyred at Cyrrhus in Syria early in the Church’s life. Later legend made them saintly doctors who treated the poor and died for the faith after terrible torments.

feast of st. cadoc
On Friday (25th September) we shall also honour our patron Saint Cadoc, a Welsh bishop and martyr. Cadoc is also called Docus, Cathmael, and Cadvael. He founded his first monastery at Llancarfan near Cardiff, and from there he went to Ireland to study for three years. Returning to Wales, he studied with Bachan, a teacher of rhetoric from Italy. He then travelled to Scotland where he founded a monastery at Cambuslang. Back to Llancarfan, his influence helped it to grow into one of the chief monasteries in South Wales. One tradition has it that he went on pilgrimage to Rome, but more certain is the knowledge of time spent in Brittany, in France. He settled there on an island in the Etel river, now called L’lle de Cado, where he built an oratory, founded a monastery and devoted himself to spreading the Gospel. This monastery became quite important, although this may have occurred after his time. According to legend, the island was invaded by some pirates who destroyed the monastery and Cadoc was forced to flee. He returned to Llancarfan, was consecrated bishop and remained there until he became too old to govern the monastery. It is thought he spent his later years at “Beneventum”, the location of which is not known. He was martyred by the Saxons near Weedon, England.
Weather permitting, children from St. Cadoc’s Primary School will be attending the 10am festal Mass on Friday. We pray that God may, through the intercession of St. Cadoc, bless our efforts to be a community of faith that is alive in Christ and may he continue bless us all in all that we do.

SECOND COLLECTION for the ecclesiastical students’ fund
The annual second collection for the education of our future priests and permanent deacons will be taken up at all Masses for the next two weekends (19th/20th September 2026 & 26th/27th September 2026) beginning this weekend to help towards the costs of this essential need.
We are blessed with a good number of seminarians in Motherwell diocese at present but it is expensive to prepare them for priesthood. A box meant for the Ecclesiastical Students’ Fund Collection will be out at the back of the church for the next two weeks beginning today. Please consider giving generously to the special collection. We continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life that men and women may be inspired to dedicate their lives to the work of service in the Church and may respond generously to God’s call.

preparation for the sacraments
There will be a meeting of the parents, guardians & carers of St. Cadoc’s and St. Charles’ School children who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion & Confirmation in St. Cadoc’s Church. This meeting will take place in St Cadoc’s Church on Tuesday 29th September 2026: First Reconciliation (Confession) Meeting at 6pm, First Holy Communion at 6.35pm & Confirmation at 7.05pm. I ask all parents, guardians & carers of the children to be at this meeting.

We are delighted to welcome back our young parishioners to our Children’s liturgy at 10am Sunday Mass (except during school holidays), which started from the beginning of September 2026. I encourage parents, guardians & carers to bring their children to the church to participate in our children’s liturgy. Our young ones are the future of our parish. Their participation in parish activities, such as the children’s liturgy, is an important step in their faith formation. It is my humble and hearty request to parents, guardians & carers that you bring your children to a Sunday Mass on a regular basis.

A BIG THANK ‘THANK YOU’ TO OUR CHURCH CLEANERS
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated parish volunteers — Irene Savage, Rose Hewitt, Rita Kelly, Anne McCafferty, Bernadette Goodwin, Frances Goodwin, Jane Ngomo, Anne Lennon, Ann Paterson & Amaka Judith Okoyeh — who generously gave their time to clean the church last Saturday. It truly makes all the difference!
We are very lucky in St. Cadoc’s that our church is cleaned every third Saturday. Many on coming to church comment on how clean, tidy and welcoming our church is, and that is testament to the wonderful cleaning team. We could do with more people willing to give of their time every three weeks to help with general cleaning of the church which takes place on a Saturday morning. If you would like to help with cleaning, please contact Anne Lennon, the parish co-ordinator, or Fr. Cirilo.

wellspring renewal project
As part of this renewal project, children from St. Cadoc’s Primary School will be bringing the offering gifts in procession today at 10 am Sunday Mass (second Sunday of the month). I thank Mrs Faloon, the head teacher, and other staff members of St. Cadoc’s Primary School for taking this initiative and for their commitment to get pupils more involved in the life of the parish. Thank you also to the parents, guardians and carers for their presence at Mass and for bringing their children to our Sunday Mass on regular basis.

If you are a tax payer, normally come to Church, and are prepared to put your money offering in a confidential numbered envelope (or pay by Standing order) and sign a simple form, then the parish can (at no cost to yourself) reclaim the tax you have already paid on that offering. For every pound you give, your parish will get back an additional 25 pence from the Inland Revenue. Thanks are extended to all those who have answered our appeal and have committed to gift-aid their offerings.
